New Metrics for Success: The fundamentals of Social Value and understanding tourism’s impact on communities

    Dana Ronan, Owner, Nourish Group

In tourism, we often focus on economic benefits and visitor numbers, but what about the broader picture—how do we know if tourism is really leaving a positive mark on our communities? That’s where social impact comes in. Social value and impact in tourism is all about understanding how tourism affects the people who live in these destinations: their quality of life, community connections, cultural preservation, and even environmental well-being.

This session will dive into what social impact in tourism actually means and why it’s becoming a hot topic, especially as more regions focus on sustainability and long-term benefits beyond just dollars and cents.

We’ll also share the results of our “how to” pilot program with the City of Ballarat and MidWest Tourism. Over the past few months, we’ve been working closely with local stakeholders to measure tourism’s social value by developing a social impact framework. From improving local employment opportunities to enhancing community engagement and cultural vitality, the results take a different perspective on tourism’s impact. The data collected creates a benchmark that could help the region make informed decisions about the future of their tourism strategies, ensuring that tourism growth benefits both visitors and residents alike.

If you’re curious about how tourism can do more
for the communities that host it, and what could be next in measurement for
regions like yours, this is the session for you. We’ll keep it practical,
grounded in real-world examples, and ready to spark a new conversation about
the true value of tourism beyond the bottom line.
