The Organisation and the Team
The Department of the Environment & Energy designs and implements Australian Government policy and programs to protect and conserve the environment, water and heritage, promote climate action, and provide adequate, reliable and affordable energy.
The Department’s Parks Australia Division jointly manages Kakadu National Park (KNP) with the Traditional Aboriginal Owners in accordance with the EPBC Act, the Kakadu lease agreement and other documents.
The Community Liaison and Education Coordinator is a member of the Tourism and Visitor Services team which manages commercial tour operations and communication, delivers interpretive and education services, supports media, commercial photographers and travel writers and manages events and VIP visits.
The Role/Duties
Under the limited supervision of the Interpretation Project Officer the Community Liaison and Education Officer will;
- Coordinate and manage staff in a cross-cultural environment (including interpretive contractors) to build skills, capacity and capability and work as an effective member in small team; and lead change in the workplace.
- Coordinate the interpretive ranger program and other education programs, including recruitment and/or contracting, training, presenting key messages, providing presentations, rosters, publicity, monitoring, review and evaluation.
- Assist the Interpretation Project Officer with the implementation of the park’s Interpretation Strategy and roll out of the Kakadu brand strategy.
- Assist the Interpretation Project Officer with the delivery of activities and events, such as Kakadu Bird Week to attract and engage target markets for Kakadu National Park.
- Deliver interpretive services to specialist groups including film crews, VIPs, school and educational groups, and media, including assisting the Parks Training Officer with the review and facilitation of the Junior Ranger Program.
- Work with staff in a cross-cultural environment and liaise with Aboriginal traditional owners, the tourism industry, official visitors, relevant organisations, specialist staff and stakeholders in relation to education and interpretation projects.
- Share the traditional owners’ vision for the future of the park and encourage, facilitate and participate in the exchange of knowledge, experience and skills between Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, the community and public.

The Ideal Candidate/Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in developing and implementing interpretive programs and educational activities.
- Experience in a stakeholder engagement environment.
- Highly motivated to mentor and develop staff and contractors from a variety of backgrounds.

- To be eligible for any position in the Department you must be an Australian Citizen.

- Hold a current driver’s licence and have the ability to drive a 4WD vehicle or undertake training.
- Hold a current First Aid certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification.
- This position also involves working with Children and the successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate Working with Children Check.
- You must undergo and satisfy a National Police History Check
