The Outdoors NSW & ACT (ONSWACT) board recently deliberated on their stance regarding the Voice referendum. The conversation that was had is something that I think we can all learn from.
Its amazing how sceptical people are where there is a case being put forward by a political party and, no more relevant than now, people must do their own homework when it comes to how they make their vote count. The reason why it is so important now as this is another step towards a national that can recognise the past, understand the current but create a better future.
The Board were advised by their First Nations Committee as well as the CEO after undertaking the Macquarie University Voice Microcredential. The result is articulated below and why…
The ONSWACT Board voted unanimously to support two key principles:
Supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart:
Their commitment to this pivotal statement underscored their dedication to recognising and valuing the cultures and wisdom of our First Nations peoples.
Endorsing the YES Vote in the Voice Referendum:
They firmly believe that a First Nation’s Voice to Parliament is a crucial stride towards better policy decisions. By welcoming the voices of Indigenous communities, it enhances the industry’s ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into outdoor activities.
The outdoors has always been a space of connection and shared experiences, transcending boundaries and bringing people together. They have seen the positive effects of incorporating Indigenous voices into their sector, and they anticipate that a First Nation’s Voice to Parliament will bolster the inclusion of First Nations viewpoints in critical policy areas, such as environmental protection and land management.
Their advocacy for the YES vote is about striving for an Australia that grows stronger through unity and understanding. When we champion the rights and voices of Indigenous people, we pave the way for more equitable and informed policy outcomes, which ultimately benefit all Australians.
Needless to say, this will not be the position of all, but everyone needs to educate themselves on why they wish
to vote the way they do. This webinar hosted by ONSWACT with Julian Lesser MP was a great chat about WHY we are having a referendum and actually what it means. A must view for everyone.
