    Accessible Tourism

Ryan Smith, Founder and Chief Access Officer, The Access Agency

80% of the buildings we use today will still be in use in 2050. From an accessible tourism point of view, this means we have a program of work ahead of us that is mostly about upgrades and revitalisation – not new builds.

Adjusting, enhancing and improving is often more difficult and requires more thought than ensuring a new building design is access compliant. When you add to this, elements such as sustainability, climate change, heritage and

CPTEP (Crime prevention through environmental design), it sounds like an impossible ask to provide more accessible tourism experiences.

What’s needed then is a holistic, collaborative approach that’s clearly positioned, easy to step through, and process-based. Something all regions can measure against. Luckily, there’s a way to do it and the foundations have already been set. See Slide Deck from Ryan’s presentation HERE
