Media Release: Tourism Awards Open to Assist Regional Australia
Nominations are open in two national niche tourism awards developed to expand the appeal of regional Australia and educate Australians about the wondrous experiences on their doorstep.
The two programs are the Grey Nomad Awards and the Australian Street Art Awards, both of which were launched in 2019.
The Grey Nomad Awards highlights caravan and camping places, attractions, tours and events which cater for mature-age road travellers in an exemplary way, while supporting positive aging through soft adventure and social inclusion.
Councils, government authorities, caravan parks, farm and station stays, pubs with camping, club and community group camps are covered in the accommodation categories.
Awards Director, Liz Rivers, said “These Awards are fostering a happier, healthier lifestyle for over 55s by providing verified information that guide grey nomads’ decisions on where to travel and what to experience”. Click here to see the categories.
“Importantly, we are building a national knowledge database about the motivations and patterns of mature-age domestic travel that will help communities across Australia regardless of whether they win an award,” Liz said.
The Australian Street Art Awards is a tourism awards for public art program, showcasing the ultimate domestic destinations where visitors can see epic, world-class street and public art.
“It’s now more important than ever to showcase to domestic visitors all the wonderful art that they can find in every corner of Australia,” Liz said.
She said the program recognises towns, cities, regions and precincts that are using one or more of the many forms of outdoor, publicly-accessible art to promote their destination and engage their community.
“That includes murals, sculptures, outdoor trails, mega murals like silo art, monuments and memorials, as well as a special category for rural art,” she said. Click here for the Australian Street Art Awards categories.
Liz said “Tourism is pivotal to most regional economies, with 46 percent of Australian tourism spend occurring in regional areas”.
Both Awards will once again be judged by tourism professionals with camping, management, events or arts tourism expertise. “Some of the Grey Nomad Awards judges have also experienced the grey nomad lifestyle,” Liz said.
Submissions in the Australian Street Art Awards close on Monday 2 November, while the Grey Nomad Awards will close the following Monday, 9 November. Both will once again be announced at the national Art of Attraction Tourism Summit.
