I’m hoping I may get some advice please. Has anyone got examples of a government owned tourism attraction that was established and run by government but then sold/leased to private enterprise? I have been involved in leasing of government premises to private enterprises, but I’m looking for examples of fully operational tourism attractions that were then sold/leased to private enterprise. Any case studies you could point me towards please? Thanks in advance 🙂

Hey @dsctourism I recall Margaret River has a guided walk through caves that was once government owned (along with a cafe and discovery centre attached) and possibly sold to the local tourism association so that all profits are reinvested into the industry. I don’t have all of the details however the best person to ask would be Melissa Carmichael @MelissaC or @Catrin Catrin Allsop

HI Stephen, I think Australian Pioneer village, Hawkesbury Council, was run by council some 20 years ago and continues as a volunteer run attraction today. There have been mane VIC’s that went from council to association (and in some cases back again). You will find that venues are certainly a common ‘was council-now privately leased’ including social enterprise hubs and the likes. hope this helps. Lori
