David Sheldon

David has been involved in the Visitor Economy since the 80’s where David established Australia’s first 4 colour weekly tourist newspapers ‘The Weekend Coral Coaster’ based entirely on Visitor News and Experiences in north Queensland before selling to Provincial Newspapers.

After several different executive roles within North Queensland and Sydney metropolitan area David and his Deborah decided a tree change was in order and developed a business plan to develop a luxury farmstay in regional Australia.

In 2003 David and his wife Deborah became “tree changers” and purchased a drought ravaged overstocked rural block of land and set about developing ‘Elm Cottage’ into what it is today a multi award winning regional experience for both the Domestic and International markets.

David is known as calling it as it is and believes the Visitor Economy in Regional Australia is not recognised by the powers to be for its real value to the Australian Economy and its importance to the social fabric of regional Australia.

David has held several positions on Boards including ARTN (now ART).

Independent Candidate for the seat of Eden Monaro 2019.

Through ARTN and Austrade David pioneered and leads the campaign for the Australian Local Government Association(ALGA) to develop a Tourism/Visitor Economy policy.

Working with the National Farmers Federation re-platformed the importance of a National Agri-Tourism Policy and the importance of ALGA and the National farmers Federations working with ARTN to develop this Agri-Tourism Policy policy.

ARTN Chair; Hobart thru to 2017 raised ARTN profile on the national platform. Initiated the Local Government research, Established beyond 2030, Memorandums of understanding with National Farmers Federation, Caravan and Camping Association, TTF. Sat on Tourism Workshop for beyond 2020. Tourism Roundtable, National Tourism Forecasting Panel, CSIRO’s the future of Regional Australia. Initiated the quarterly STO meetings during his time at ART to build the network and boost collaboration.

Presented to ASCOT, Tourism Ministers meetings, ALGA’s National Congress, National Economic Development Manager’s Convention, Regional Airports Convention, NSW LGA Tourism Conference, Tourism South Australian Tourism Industry Council Convention and Austrades Planning days.
