Ian Mason has a passion for regional tourism, with over 10 years’ management experience in visitor servicing, marketing and tourism development within local government and regional tourism organisations in Victoria and Queensland.
He is currently Coordinator at Sarina Sugar Shed, an award-winning tourism facility and distillery near Mackay in Queensland, operated by Mackay Regional Council. He was recently seconded to a project management role to oversee the Sugar Shed’s proposed redevelopment. Ian’s background is in communications and marketing, having worked in the media industry for 10 years, before pursuing his love for tourism. He also has 10 years of vocational education experience, teaching across tourism, hospitality and events courses, including stints in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai.
Ian has sat on various tourism committees, including Vice President of Queensland Information Centres Association, Secretary of Tourism Macedon Ranges, and President of Phillip Island Tourism Association. He is currently Secretary of Queensland Distillers Association and a Board member of Mackay Isaac Tourism.
Ian is also a state tourism awards judge in New South Wales (9 years) and Queensland (3 years), and a national judge in 2023.
Ian holds a Bachelor of Business in Travel & Tourism Management, a Certificate in Public Relations, and a Masters in Communications. He is also a certified trainer and assessor.
