    Position Vacant: Senior Visitor Experience Officer (Retail operations)

    • Permanent Full time
    • 38 Hours per week
    • Salary $67,758.60 per annum plus 9.5% superannuation
    • Art Gallery of Ballarat

    The Art Gallery of Ballarat provides a focus for visual arts in the Ballarat region. It is the oldest and largest regional Gallery in Australia with a collection of Australian art which ranks in the top 5 in the nation. Special collections relate to early Ballarat, Goldfields, Eureka, the Lindsay family and medieval and renaissance manuscripts. The Gallery aims to stimulate appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts for the people of Ballarat region and to attract visitors from the wider Australian communities. The Gallery conserves a major collection, displays and interprets the collection, presents temporary exhibitions, tours, workshops, lectures and musical and performance events.

    The Gallery has recently adopted a new strategic plan which places audiences at the heart of everything we do. We are entering a new phase in our history and need to build the team to achieve our new plan.

    We are looking for a dynamic, results focused, creative person to lead a high performing team to drive exceptional customer service and manage the Gallery Shop and Front of House including the development of staff. The successful applicant will work closely with the Gallery team to develop unique product and generate brand awareness and income for the Gallery. This challenging and rewarding role provides direct visitor engagement and sales and first point of welcome for visitors to the Gallery.

    Key Selection Criteria

    • At least 5 years’ experience managing a successful retail speciality store, with experience in tourism and/or art gallery or museum retail
    • Demonstrated knowledge of and successful experience in the day-to-day management of a retail environment, including sales and management of staff
    • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to delegate tasks, supervise and train staff in a way consistent with Gallery values and build a cohesive and productive team
    • Proven ability to analyse information and make recommendations that contribute towards sales strategies
    • Experience in managing a computerised point of sale retail system, cash handling and reconciliation
    • Experience in product and merchandise development
    • Proven experience in KPI reporting, including the generation of sales reports, stock valuation reports, and annual stocktake reports
    • Proven retail buying experience in the areas of giftware, artists’ products, specialist books and art related publications along with visual merchandising experience
    • Ability to lead a team, manage rosters, motivate staff and develop a successful sales culture
    • Experience with online sales
    • With a focus on service delivery, the ability to work flexibly, cooperatively and an ability to work outside core hours as required.
