RE-DESIGNING JOB ROLES IF WE WANT TO INNOVATE INDUSTRY

Written by Ali Uren – Founder and Director of Kiikstart

To be able to redesign ourselves and our businesses, it’s essential we’re looking at not just what we’re doing in business but how we’re doing it.

This requires a well thought through, but a brave review of job roles to ensure what we’re doing still has relevance and value to the business and the market we are serving.

We need to ask:

  1. Do these roles in their current format make the best use of the talent and skill we have available to us?
  • Are we performing roles filled with waste and inefficiency?
  • Do these roles place the business in the best position to create new opportunities into the future?

SHIFTING WHERE OUR FOCUS NEEDS TO GO AS LEADERS

Innovation can be about product and service (the WHAT), but more importantly, it’s about the style and way the consumer interacts with the product, team, brand and overall communications.

True innovation can and is found in the HOW and the WHY of our service and product design.

This means we must move from thinking all about the strategy most of the time (the what) and commit more energy and focus into designing and delivering the tactics (the how).

THINKING AND IMAGINATION WILL BE ESSENTIAL

2020 saw the rate of Innvoation accelerate but most business models, skill sets and processes fail to keep pace.

We should not be surprised by this as models, people and processes have been designed in the past with a different set of trends, expectations and influences.

Regardless of the role, the ability to be able to think and be creative and imaginative is key to a business’s ability to grow and remain relevant.

The teams who can most successfully respond to uncertainty will be able to design roles and cultural environments that do the following:

Each role needs to allow space for:

  • the creation of continuous ideas – remember not all ides will be suitable but we have to give space to think about what is possible
  • the trial and experimentation of these ideas into the real world
  • time and headspace to review and assess the success of these ideas – an innovation post-mortem

TECHNOLOGY AND HOW IT RELATES TO ROLE DESIGN

Technology is such a vital part of a business, but before you introduce technology into your job roles, stop and consider the following points:

Technology needs to be able to bring benefit such as:

  • improved human connectedness between business and visitor
  • increased accessibility between organisation, staff and client
  • improved health and wellbeing of staff and clients
  • higher quality of servicing
  • waste minimisation in terms of time and staff resources
  • improved sustainability and viability
  • greater consistency across processes and systems while celebrating the uniqueness of your staff
  • higher performance with more efficient outcomes
  • diversification of services and how these can be accessed – not just via technology
  • positive impact on the environment
  • increased creativity within the end-to-end client experience
  • improved methods of community connection
  • new ways of learning – for both staff and clients
  • increased access to knowledge, support and servicing.
